Gift Guide for Babies
Although babies are not necessarily difficult to buy for, each baby is different. It's important to consider the baby's age, capabilities and interests, as well as the parents' goals. Safety is a very important factor when it comes to toys. Following these few simple rules will assure you that your gift will be safe, parent-approved and appreciated.
The Rules of Giving to Babies:
Every baby uses bottles and pacifiers, which is the worst reason to give them as gifts. Chances are baby already has enough of these. Disposable items like diapers are okay for baby shower gifts, but it shouldn’t go past that. Giving a box of diapers as a gift for Christmas is the equivalent of wrapping up a pack of toilet paper. It’s something that would probably be used, but it’s not an appropriate gift. If you want to give a useful gift, try a baby basket full of bath products instead.
Baby keepsake items make great gifts because they will be enjoyed for years to come. A baby hand print or footprint kit, baby time capsule, engraved frame, personalized poem or photo gift will become treasured family heirlooms. If it is baby’s first Christmas, there are a number of adorable ornaments and stockings on the market.
If you’re buying baby clothes, make sure you know the right size. Babies grow fast, and it’s always a safe bet to ask the parents. If you can’t reach them, always go with a size bigger than your best estimation. At least the baby will grow into it. For clothing, always include a receipt just in case.
Babies put everything in their mouths, so any toy or game with small pieces is a potential chocking hazard. Avoid balls, marbles, or toys with parts smaller than 2" long or 1 3/4" in diameter. Also avoid anything with sharp edges or points. Any toy that can impale tiny fingers is not a good gift.
Pay attention to the recommended ages on toy boxes. They choose these ages based on the safety of the toy and the capabilities required to use it. An advanced baby may be able to operate a toy suggested for a higher age, just make sure it’s safe. You’ll want to check the quality of the toy. Can it be easily pulled apart? Baby toys should be sturdy with secured parts. Also look for toys that are non-toxic and can be easily washed or sanitized. You want try to keep dirt and germs out of baby’s mouth.
Parents will appreciate any educational gift. It’s never too soon to start reading to or teaching baby. Videos, CDs or books that expose baby to numbers, letters, colors or animals are great tools. Educational toys make the parents’ job easier and give baby a head start in life.
When in doubt, ask the parents. They will be able to tell you what baby has and what baby needs. If you haven’t been around the baby much, they can tell you what toys he/she seems to like best. If you follow their advice, you’re assured that mom and dad will approve of your gift, and it probably won’t be returned.
Good luck and happy shopping!
